BMW insiders announce that the Bavarian maker is preparing a 354hp tri-turbo diesel engine based on the current 3.0L inline-6. It seems that the new tri-turbo engine will equip a performance version of the actual BMW X5. The tri-turbo diesel X5 will be as well equipped with the latest Efficient Dynamics technology and Break Energy Regeneration (KERS).
BMW diesels are recognized for their outrageous performance (reliability, power and low fuel consumption), thanks to attention that Bavarian engineers pay to research and innovation.
The latest bi-turbo diesel engine, the 3.0sd is capable of making 286hp and 580 Nm of torque starting from 1.750 rpm and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7 seconds. I presume that the future tri-turbo will produce about 330hp and at least 700 Nm of torque. Nothing is for sure though and we expect for BMW to confirm these gossips.
According to rumors, the engine will be available only on the European market, BMW X5 being the first to have this tri-turbo diesel engine. But we will surely find it even on X6, 5-Series and 7-Series models.
