Schnitzer designed a twin-double-overhead cylinder-head kit which would fit on the BMW M10 engine block, this was the AC Schnitzer BMW 20-4 engine
The engine has its origin 1971 / 1972 when Josef Schnitzer designed it, then the 20-4 engine-components were casted, machined and then homologated for the FIA.
The Schnitzer BMW 20-4 engine was offered
- as a 2.0l engine with carburetors for BMW 2002 Rally Race Cars
- as a 2.0l engine with Kugelfischer injection for Sports Cars(Chevron), Formula 2 single seat and BMW 2002 Gp. 2 Race Cars from 1976 a 1.4l
- as 2.1l version was developed and this was raced by Team Schnitzer from 1977 to 1981 in the BMW 2002 and BMW 320/E21 Gp. 5 Race Cars in DRM / Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft, the predecessor of DTM.
In 1978 Harald Ertl won the DRM Drivers Championship in a BMW Team 320/E21 Gp. 5 . It is an non street legal Classic Motorsport Race Engine.
