BERLIN (Reuters) -- BMW said CEO Norbert Reithofer would step down in May, one year early, and hand the reins of the luxury carmaker to 49-year-old production chief Harald Krueger.
Reithofer, 58, who has run BMW since 2006, is slated to succeed Joachim Milberg as chairman of the company's supervisory board, BMW said in a statement today.
BMW is opting for youth amid far-reaching changes in the auto industry. Krueger will become the youngest CEO of a major carmaker.
