BMW Key Re-Programming Information
Programming your BMW Remote Keys There are two procedures to re-program the remote central locking keys. The first procedure requires you have one working key. If you donΆt have any keys that are matched to the carΆs computer system, then you will need to use procedure 2.
Procedure 1
1. Get in to the car and close all the doors.
2. Switch the ignition on and turn it back off quickly. (within 5 seconds) to start the process. The next part must take place within 30 seconds.
3. Remove the 1st key.
4. Hold the key in the direction of the remote receiver antenna.
5. Press and hold the unlock button and then press the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button and the doors will lock which then confirms the operation.
6. Quickly repeat steps 4 and 5 for any further keys you wish to program. If this does not work, then try doing the keys in opposite order. (Key 2 before key 1).
Procedure 2
If the above does not work or if you do not have a working remote please use the following:
1. Place the key in the ignition and turn it to position 1 five times very quickly.
2. Then remove the key from the ignition.
3. Press and hold the unlock button then press the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button.
4. If you want to do another key do step 3 on that key within 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition back on to complete the procedure. Both these procedures are used by BMW dealers to re-program keys, both for themselves and customers – they can charge up to £40 for this short process. Both these methods have been tested several times on a number of models (including the E46 3 Series and E39 5 Series). On every test the procedures worked first time. If you donΆt manage to code the key(s) the first time, wait a bit then try again.
